How to Plan a Month-Long Stay in Miramar, Guaymas: Budget, Activities & More

Planning a longer stay in Mexico this winter? Whether you're a snowbird chasing the sun, a remote worker looking to swap Zoom calls for ocean breezes, or a family seeking an extended adventure, the Miramar area in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico is an ideal beachside escape. This peaceful coastal neighborhood offers the perfect mix of local charm, a warm welcome, and just enough adventure. Here’s how to make the most of a month-long stay in this hidden gem of Sonora.

Prioritize Comfortable, Well-Located Accommodations

When you're staying for a few nights, it's easy to put up with a small space or a less-than-ideal location. But when you're settling in for a month or more, comfort becomes everything. You want a home that makes you feel like you can breathe, unwind, and live.

Look for a place with thoughtful design, outdoor areas like a garden or patio, strong WiFi (especially if you're working remotely), and—of course—easy beach access. Being just steps from the sand and surf means you don’t have to "go do" anything to feel like you’re on vacation. Every day starts and ends with the sound of the ocean, and that alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Yes, you may pay a little more for the right space, but when it doubles as your office, retreat, and home for the month, it’s worth every peso.

Many accommodations offer discounts for extended stays, especially during the winter months. If you find an accommodation that suites your needs, reach out to them directly before booking on third-party websites which charge management fees. Often, booking directly guarantees you the best possible price. Want to learn more about our discounts?

Enjoy Local Eats Just Steps Away

One of the best parts of staying in Miramar long-term is getting to know the beach vendors and family-run eateries. From fresh ceviche and piping-hot tamales to cold coconuts and whole fried fish, the local flavor is unbeatable—and affordable.

Some of the local favorites include the marlin or shrimp quesadillas at Los Chiringuitos on the beach (which you can get for about $2-4 USD) and the cocos con pepihuates (cucumber, peanuts, and hot sauce with tamarind candy) for under $10 USD. Make sure you bring your cash with you in pesos to pay!

You’ll find that just a few steps from your front door, the food rivals anything in a restaurant. Bring a beach chair, grab a plate, and watch the sunset with dinner in your lap. No reservations needed.

What to Do While You’re Here

With a whole month, you can settle into a nice rhythm of relaxation and low-key adventure. Here are a few favorites to build into your routine:

  • Walk the Guaymas Malecón and shop the Mercado Municipal– Great for a morning stroll, people-watching, or picking up food from local vendors. This is a great area to expand your grocery shopping and prep for a good grill fest by visiting some of the carniceros.

  • Browse the Tianguis (Street/Flea Markets) – Pick up handmade crafts, fresh produce, thrifted clothes, souvenirs, and even local honey. Each one is a little different, and they pop up around town weekly. Go early in the day because they close up shop when by midday!

  • Take a Day Trip to San Carlos – Less than 20 minutes away, this beach town offers scenic viewpoints and restaurants with a view. This is also our go-to area for locally roasted coffee and some great brunch spots. Full of expats and local ocean-lovers alike, this is great area to do some shopping or to explore snorkeling and scuba diving.

  • Go Dolphin Watching or Fishing – Rent a boat from the San Carlos marina and set out to see dolphins (and sometimes whales!) in the wild. Deep sea and coastal fishing trips are available with local charters! Nothing says fresh fish for dinner like catching it yourself that morning.

  • Catch Live Music or a Local Festival – Ask your host or check social media for events during your stay. There's often something happening on the weekends, sometimes even right on the beach!

Budgeting for a Longer Stay

When planning a month in Miramar, your biggest cost will be your accommodations—and it should be. Choosing a slightly higher-end beach rental that has everything you need means you won't feel the urge to constantly go out or plan costly activities.

You might spend a bit more upfront, but you'll save by cooking some meals at home, walking to the beach instead of driving everywhere, and simply enjoying your space. Local groceries, street food, and activities are generally very affordable, so the bulk of your budget can (and should) go toward choosing the right home base.

When it comes to cost of living, you can plan to spend roughly $8-16 USD per person per day on food, depending on how much you are wanting to dine out and whether you are cooking at home. One of the best ways to save money on extended stays is having a great kitchen with lots of space for food storage so you can buy groceries and put on your chef's hat at home.

Local cell phone plans are very affordable if you plan to have a Mexican number during your stay. Oxxo's are local convenience markets that cell SIM cards you can easily swap into an unlocked phone and charge with minutes, all for about $20 USD.

With vacation rentals like Casa Recuerdos, you don't have to worry about additional costs like utilities or internet. We also have a landscaping team that comes 2x per week to help keep the garden and jacuzzi in top shape, so all you need to worry about is food, fun, and time in the sun.

Final Tips for Settling In

  • Grocery Stores & Markets: There are several supermarkets nearby, including a Ley, Abarrey, Walmart, and Sam's Club, but don't hesitate to try the local shops for fresh produce, pan dulce, and handmade tortillas.

  • Language: Basic Spanish helps, but locals are friendly and patient. A smile and a few phrases go a long way! And don't forget how handy a smart phone with a translation app can be when you're not sure of a word or phrase.

  • Internet & Power: Look for rentals that offer high-speed WiFi and a backup power source if you're working remotely. Casa Recuerdos has both! We are happy to provide more information if you have any questions about working remotely

Whether you spend your days working from a breezy patio, hunting down the best beach snacks, or reading on a hammock by the banana trees, a month in Miramar gives you the rare chance to slow down and sink into beachside living. The sunshine, community, and simple joys here make it more than a vacation—it's a reset.

So go ahead, book the stay, pack your flip-flops, and let the ocean set your pace.
